Bolin Chen and Ivy Chen Teams Up Again for Campus Confidential

Campus-Confidential-poster
Third time’s the charm. Though it does not necessarily mean that the first and second were duds. On the contrary, Modern People was great. I was happy that Hong Guo ended up with Fei Fan (Hu Ge) but had she chosen Ling Lie (Bolin) it would still be a good ending for me. BBS: Silent Code also did pretty well at the box office. And on their third team-up, the two may actually have a happier ending.

Campus Confidential 愛情無全順 is about a campus legend. According to rumors, there is a mysterious lake in the campus where according to legends, if a couple meets by the lake they would be bound by a spell of love and will be destined for life. Liang Xiaoqi (Ivy Chen)is the envy of every girl and the fantasy of every guy on campus. She’s the campus “it” girl with a hot boyfriend Zhang Sheng (Jiang Kang zhe) She wants to refute the story after accidentally falling into the muddy lake straight into the campus nerd Wi Zhuan Xun (Bolin Chen). However, after the incident a series of unfortunate events follows which seems to be bringing them even closer to each other.

It may not be the most original concept but seeing Chen Bolin with pimples, warts and all is worth it. He absolutely looks the part! Plus the two of them together is just fun to watch. They have a certain dynamics that works for the camera. I’m definitely not gonna let this pass.

Andy Chen Yi as the Legendary Flower Boy Gao Changgong aka Lan Ling Wang

andy-chen

Although he may not have the bravado nor the acting chops of or lack thereof of Feng Shao Feng, I do think that he fits the role much better aesthetically. He IS a “flower boy” and looking at the stills, you could actually understand why he had to cover that pretty face. Unlike FSF, who looks rather manly than delicate.

You could tell he looks good even with the mask on

You could tell he looks good even with the mask on

I remember the scene where Lan Ling Wang and Xue Wu met for the first time while he was taking a bath by the small lake (or was it a falls?) Xue Wu immediately took off her clothes and joined in thinking that he was a woman. I was like, seriously?! Which angle? Just because he had long hair doesn’t make him look any less than a man. It had its flaws, yes, but was still a good series especially with Ariel Lin who makes everything she does wonderful.

Check out those pecs!

Princess of Lan Ling or what I’d like to call the younger version of Prince of Lan Ling, looks promising enough. The core is still the same, that is the love triangle among Gao Changgong-Princess of Lan Ling-Yuwen Yong. But this time, Yuwen Yong’s character takes the lead while Lan Ling Wang takes the back seat.

Liu Yi Fei Gets Waxed at Madame Tussauds

Personally I would have loved to see her Xiao Long Nu wax figure more than anything else just like the character waxes of Nicky Wu as Emperor Kangxi and Sun Li as the legendary Zhen Huan. Instead it’s a modern version in an embellished pink gown. She joins other Asian stars including Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Sandra Ng and Kim Hyun Joong at Madame Tussauds, Wuhan.

Playful as she is, Liu Yi Fei kissed her wax self saying that she’s happy to have finally met her twin sister. She also coyly posed with superstars Michael Jackson and Johnny Depp and excitedly took a picture with Einstein.

Jin Se Yeon Cast in Age of Feeling Joins Kim Hyun Joong,Lim Soo Young

Jin Se Yeon has been cast as Yoon Ok Ryeon in the upcoming KBS2 drama Age of Feeling감격시대, a role originally offered to Kim So Eun who backed out at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts. The drama was intented for a November release but because of its story which necessitates filming overseas extensively, it was pushed to a January play date after Bel Ami. Since the drama is about the struggle of a group of young people during the 1930’s just before the war, the production team had to film key scenes in Shanghai.

The last time I saw Jin Se Yeon was in the Joo Ji Hoon comeback project Five Fingers. She also took over the role originally intended for T-Ara’s Ham Eun Jung. Back then, Ham Eun Jung was forcibly removed because of the whole bullying incident which was blown out of epic proportion. After a gazillion of he says, she says and an apology later, everything is back to normal for the group.

She joins Kim Hyun Joong (Shin Jung Tae), the male lead and female lead Lim Soo Young (Ga-ya). It has been reported that KHJ has already started filming. With the released BTS, looks to me like he really wants to work the whole machismo thing and I say it’s working. He sure exudes tough-rough male to me. What would Yun Ji Hoo (Boys Over Flowers) say to all this? After the failed City Conquest, this has got to be a welcome respite for him.

Reply 1994, To Get an Extension?

Photo/tvN

The cable TV drama Reply 1994 응답하라 1994 (tvN), was originally set to have a 20 episode run on 1 episode per week but started airing back-to-back, (Friday-Saturday) episodes from the second week. The drama has aired 11 of its intended 20 episodes in the last six weeks. Initially, if completed as planned, a total of 20 episodes with 9 more remaining until the finale in the last week of December will be broadcast.

But the production company and network is now faced with a tough decision. To extend or not, that is the question. It is doing even better that it’s predecessor, Reply 1997. The rating is continuously rising. With cable TV standard, this is beyond remarkable. According to Nielsen Korea the ratings are as follows; Episode 1 2.6%, Episode 2-3 3%, 3.2%, Episode 4-5 4.2%, 4.7%,Episode 6-7 5.8%, 6.2%,Episode 8-9 7.1%, 8.1%,Episode 10-11 8.8% 8.8% (up 10.6%). Calling it a phenomenal hit would be a just summation.

PD Shin Won Ho however denied this rumor saying that there is no extension when asked by the media. He said, that a lot of things should be considered especially the story. It’s good to know that doesn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the drama for the sake of ratings.

Although I am not utterly loyal to this drama, I think that it’s throwback feel is what is drawing people to it. Nostalgia plus the hilarious cast of mismatch couples are just some of the perfect elements this drama offer. So if you aren’t watching this yet, I suggest you do, like right now!

Moon Geun Young and Kim Bum Ends Euro Tour

Photo/TV Daily

The newly minted love birds found their way back to their home land holding hands via Incheon International Airport after a month of honeymoon European tour. The two look so much in love. They are even sporting the couple look. Why, their shoes are even matching! How cute is that! I bet they have tons of couple stuff; shirts, eye wear, rings, hoodies, mugs, and what not. They are in what we call the “honeymoon” stage so the real test is yet to come. I sincerely hope they last longer than other celeb couples (Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young) after reality sets in and their work pulls them apart.

They just look so perfect together and I swear you could almost hear birds chirping when they made their way through the airport amidst the buzzing paparazzi. I bet they are thanking their managers for giving them Goddess of Fire Jung Yi, where they met. It was a dud, true. But at least something good came out of it! It’s good that they got a chance to relax a bit and spend time together because we all know that right after, Kim Bum will be working on his projects in the mainland while Geun Young figures out what project to do next. I hope the media would just give them time to work on their relationship in private. But I guess, that’s like asking for the moon.

The Pursuit of Happiness Episode 7 – Recap

To bravely face what you have intentionally refused to face for fear that if doing so would mean finding out that everything has been a fantasy…that takes courage.

EPISODE 7

After going through the motion of trying to get over someone,  Ji An Lei found her way back to He Wei Ting house. She apologized for the trouble she caused him and for inconveniencing him. She poured her heart out for him during that short gut wrenching moment. She told him how having him in her life made her feel that she deserves to be loved and that his presense gave her emotional and mental assurance. Damn! It was so painful watching this part, I was actually crying my heart out just like Lei lei. Her face is all wet with tears and she’s in agony but here she is telling the person she loves that it wasn’t a mistake to have kept him in her heart for so long. At least HWT is not a jerk. He told JAL that she missed a lot of chances with other men because of him and that she also truly loves Hai Lun. But he also told her that during the time he was away, sending postcards to her made him feel that he still had a home, to which JAL replied “Too bad, I wasn’t the one who made you want to stay”. I love how strong she is saying those feelings out loud. It must have taken all her will power when she finally said “He Wei Ting, My love for you ends here” and walked away.

All the while, Huang Yi Kang was waiting outside by his motorbike. Lei lei came out sobbing looking as if she just lost everything. Yi Kang then asked her to go for a spin. I literally wanted to poke his eyes out at this point. I mean obviously the girl needs a hug dude! Just hug her already! But at least he whisked her away in his bike. Hai Lun also came to HWT’s place and heard everything. So now, she has no doubt that he loves her. She also said that she ought to be braver just like him and stand up to her dad. But HWT told her that he didn’t want to put a wedge between her and her family. Meanwhile Lei lei and HYK spent the whole night by the beach. Just talking with each other, giving comfort and being each other’s strength. Although he has fully given up on his crush, she on the other hand still can’t completely let go.

The following day, Lei Lei got a surprise visit. Her older sister came to Taipei for a wedding and decided to drop in on her. Yi Kang opened the door and a surprised An Lei jie asked who he was. He explained that he was Xiao Yun and Da Kai’s friend to which JAL’s sister replied “they went to Europe so what are you still doing here?” So JAL told her that they were dating so she didn’t need to set her up on blind dates. She begged HYK to help her pretend that they were dating telling him that her sister would not stop setting her up on dates unless she’s already seeing someone. Of course, he could only follow. So Yi Kang hid in his room or at least he tried to while JAL and her sister talk in the living room. HYK tiptoed to the bathroom unable to hold it in but unfortunately JAL’S sister needed to take a leak as well so he hid in the shower. While in the bathroom, she  asked JAL if the two of them have already seen each other’s bodies, or if they have been so close to the point of kissing, or if they have hugged each other. Both of them thought of the same memories just then. An Lei jie woke up and heard someone snoring in the other room so she entered and found a sleeping HYK! So she took off and left a note telling JAL to be brave if she has found love and that she didn’t have to hide even if they were already living together, or so she thought.

Yi Kang and Lei lei went to work and she thanked him again for covering for her. Hai Lun asked JAL for some private “girl talk”. She told JAL that she heard everything she said to HWT. She apologized, thanked her and asked if they could still be friends. It’s really hard when your competition is being nice to you (real or not) because it robs you of every weapon. It leaves you defenseless. It is much easier if she were a bitch. But I suppose the writers don’t want to go that way. So be it! Meanwhile HWT crossed paths with An Lei jie and she spilled the beans on him.

Jia Yi and Tiffany are waiting for Lei lei to finish working so they could all go to a KTV. Jia Yi is having some marital issues so she refuses to go home. She suspects that her husband is having an affair. On their way out, a masked man suddenly grabbed JAL from behind. The thief took some of their stuff, tied their hands and locked them in the room. The two women started crying while JAL remained strong. Jia Yi was fearful that she wouldn’t have a chance to see her husband and apologize for being stubborn while Tiffany was afraid that she won’t have a chance to tell A Tai that she loves him. Suddenly, Wen Ge, Jia Yi’s husband arrived and rescued them. The police came afterwards.  JAL thought to herself who would she want to see the most if it were her last day.  So the four of them went to a KTV and Jia Yi and her husband are okay again as if nothing happened. Ah Tai also came and comforted Tiffany. Poor Lei lei, she could only sing by herself and wish her friends continued happiness.

She got so drunk that she started walking the wrong way, thankfully HYK came to the rescue again. HWT happens to be in the same place. He was quietly observing the group but came rushing when JAL suddenly fell. He saw Yi kang and told him to take care of her properly. A drunk JAL hugged HWT and told him she was happy and that her friends also found their happiness. He then forced JAL to ride in HYK’s motorbike and the two drive away. She was so drunk that she started slipping so HYK took her arms and wrapped them in his waist (that gentle touch was so cute),but still slipped, leaving HYK with no choice but to place her in front in stead. It was so a sweet torture watching the scene. She was leaning on HYK, singing a sad song (the beautiful insert song which I don’t know the title of) while crying at the same time. They stopped at some statues (which look awfully similar to the opening theme) and JAL puked. I’m already beginning to fall for HYK myself her, he pats her back while she throws up and then cleans up her mess (who does that!? I mean what guy does that?!) She rambles about how her friends found happiness but she hasn’t at her age. HYK reassured her that it doesn’t matter because she still looks cute and she can surely begin a new life. But how can one let go of a love you’ve had for 10 years?

Tony Yang Joins Tang Yan, Hawick Lau for “Lady and the Liar”

Official Poster

From the makers of the beautifully executed period series Prince of Lan Ling come another period drama starring Tang Yan, Hawick Lau, Tony Yang and Lemon Zhang called Lady and the Liar千金女贼. What is more interesting about this production is that it brings back the art director responsible for the artistic scenery in Prince of Lan Ling, Gossip Girl artistic director Charles E. MacCarry and the South Korean team responsible for the awesome special effects in Painted Skin 2. If the producers are willing to spend as much and make sure that the technical aspects are well made, this could be another sure fire hit in the making.

The story took place in the 1930’s during the Shanghai Concession, at a time when chaos gripped the land. It tells the story of Jiang Xin (Tang Yan),the daughter of the richest man in Shanghai but lost all her memories due to a shipwreck. Her life was stolen by Du Xiao han (Yang Rong) posing as Jiang Xin. Their fates are interchanged. Two men helped her regain her memories but who would she trust, the man who lied to her, Bai Zheng Qing (Hawick Lau) or the man who constantly stood by her side, Wen Sheng jie (Tony Yang).

The boot camp will start in December and is slated for release next year. It is a 45 episode period-romance directed by Zhou Xiao-peng. The team gathered for the ceremonial peace offering and prayer lead by Tang Yan and Tony minus Hawick, who was absent due to prior filming commitments. I actually wonder how they manage their schedules. All 3 of them are currently doing other projects. It will also be Hawick and Tang tang’s second time working together but I’m pretty sure that no “love angle” is necessary since everyone knows that Hawick is engaged to Tang Tang’s real life BFF Yang Mi.

50th Golden Horse Awards Red Carpet and Winners!

50th golden horse

Stars from China, Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia and Taiwan gathered at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for the prestigious 50th Golden Horse Awards this weekend. It was a who’s who of the greater China region as A-listers attend the Chinese version of the Oscars. The event is even more sentimental because it brought together previous winners over the years who normally don’t come together in one occasion. It was specially nice to see Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung, two of the best actresses,in one event again. Singaporean film Ilo.Ilo won top honors as it bagged the Best Feature Film while The Grandmaster took home several major awards.

Fashion-wise, I like Maggie’s royal blue Elie Saab lace gown and Sonia Sui’s daring, elegant black gown. Shu Qi’s Valentino dress is sort of out of place and her hair is just plain wrong. The french braid can be both casual and dramatic if done the right way but hers was just messy. Yao yao’s mini dress is age appropriate but she should have gone for pumps instead of those hideous platforms. The men were almost identical in their black suits.

Here is the List of Winners

“Pretty Man” Struggles On It’s First Week while “The Heirs” Soars Higher

Photo/Nate

While “The Heirs” is enjoying the air up there by its lonesome registering 22.1% (Thursday) it’s highest rating since its debut, the two other rival dramas Bel Ami/Pretty Man and Medical Top Team are wallowing down below with a measly 6.1% and 6% respectively.

It is interesting to note that the spot vacated by Secret which ended it’s run with 20.6% is struggling so much against it’s direct competition. But I think this is to be expected. Pretty Man/Bel Ami‘s core audience are the young adults which are also the core audience of The Heirs. The latter has got the upper hand since it’s already halfway through so most viewers are unlikely to switch sides at this point. Maybe it did manage to snatch a handful of them (or not). Now where did the other 14% go? The question is, who are the 14%? They are the 30-40s and the ahjummas who loved the angsty, convulated melodrama that was Secret. You don’t really expect them to watch a drama centered on a flower boy? How could relate to that? With all these hurdles to overcome, Bel Ami has a steep path ahead. But all is not lost, after all it has just begun and although the story is quite cliche and we have seen Jang Geun Suk playing a narcissistic role (You’re Beautiful), the tandem is fresh and fairly adorable. Maybe it might just work. It is working pretty well for Lee Min Ho (Kim Tan), who after a good many years is wearing a high uniform again just like in Boys Over Flowers (Gu Jun Pyo). It’s still early in the game so Bel Ami still has a fighting chance or it might just go Medical Top Team‘s route and stay below.
