Reply 1994, To Get an Extension?

The cable TV drama Reply 1994 응답하라 1994 (tvN), was originally set to have a 20 episode run on 1 episode per week but started airing back-to-back, (Friday-Saturday) episodes from the second week. The drama has aired 11 of its intended 20 episodes in the last six weeks. Initially, if completed as planned, a total of 20 episodes with 9 more remaining until the finale in the last week of December will be broadcast.

But the production company and network is now faced with a tough decision. To extend or not, that is the question. It is doing even better that it’s predecessor, Reply 1997. The rating is continuously rising. With cable TV standard, this is beyond remarkable. According to Nielsen Korea the ratings are as follows; Episode 1 2.6%, Episode 2-3 3%, 3.2%, Episode 4-5 4.2%, 4.7%,Episode 6-7 5.8%, 6.2%,Episode 8-9 7.1%, 8.1%,Episode 10-11 8.8% 8.8% (up 10.6%). Calling it a phenomenal hit would be a just summation.

PD Shin Won Ho however denied this rumor saying that there is no extension when asked by the media. He said, that a lot of things should be considered especially the story. It’s good to know that doesn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the drama for the sake of ratings.

Although I am not utterly loyal to this drama, I think that it’s throwback feel is what is drawing people to it. Nostalgia plus the hilarious cast of mismatch couples are just some of the perfect elements this drama offer. So if you aren’t watching this yet, I suggest you do, like right now!

Moon Geun Young and Kim Bum Ends Euro Tour

Photo/TV Daily

The newly minted love birds found their way back to their home land holding hands via Incheon International Airport after a month of honeymoon European tour. The two look so much in love. They are even sporting the couple look. Why, their shoes are even matching! How cute is that! I bet they have tons of couple stuff; shirts, eye wear, rings, hoodies, mugs, and what not. They are in what we call the “honeymoon” stage so the real test is yet to come. I sincerely hope they last longer than other celeb couples (Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young) after reality sets in and their work pulls them apart.

They just look so perfect together and I swear you could almost hear birds chirping when they made their way through the airport amidst the buzzing paparazzi. I bet they are thanking their managers for giving them Goddess of Fire Jung Yi, where they met. It was a dud, true. But at least something good came out of it! It’s good that they got a chance to relax a bit and spend time together because we all know that right after, Kim Bum will be working on his projects in the mainland while Geun Young figures out what project to do next. I hope the media would just give them time to work on their relationship in private. But I guess, that’s like asking for the moon.

“Pretty Man” Struggles On It’s First Week while “The Heirs” Soars Higher

While “The Heirs” is enjoying the air up there by its lonesome registering 22.1% (Thursday) it’s highest rating since its debut, the two other rival dramas Bel Ami/Pretty Man and Medical Top Team are wallowing down below with a measly 6.1% and 6% respectively.

It is interesting to note that the spot vacated by Secret which ended it’s run with 20.6% is struggling so much against it’s direct competition. But I think this is to be expected. Pretty Man/Bel Ami‘s core audience are the young adults which are also the core audience of The Heirs. The latter has got the upper hand since it’s already halfway through so most viewers are unlikely to switch sides at this point. Maybe it did manage to snatch a handful of them (or not). Now where did the other 14% go? The question is, who are the 14%? They are the 30-40s and the ahjummas who loved the angsty, convulated melodrama that was Secret. You don’t really expect them to watch a drama centered on a flower boy? How could relate to that? With all these hurdles to overcome, Bel Ami has a steep path ahead. But all is not lost, after all it has just begun and although the story is quite cliche and we have seen Jang Geun Suk playing a narcissistic role (You’re Beautiful), the tandem is fresh and fairly adorable. Maybe it might just work. It is working pretty well for Lee Min Ho (Kim Tan), who after a good many years is wearing a high uniform again just like in Boys Over Flowers (Gu Jun Pyo). It’s still early in the game so Bel Ami still has a fighting chance or it might just go Medical Top Team‘s route and stay below.

November 18th (Monday) Drama Ratings Result

First, full disclosure. I don’t care about the other shows so I am only posting the results for the dramas I watch.
Yesterday, November 18th the Ha Ji Won, Joo Jin Mo lead Empress Ki (MBC) managed to maintain it’s lead among the other programs in its time slot with a 15.5% rating. This is also enough to land on the 5th spot overall ratings. Melody of Love사랑은 노래를 타고 (which is surprising everyone by outperforming others) is lording over the competition as the overall number one with 23.7%.

Meanwhile (SBS) Choi Ji Woo’s Suspicious Housekeeper got 9.5% while (KBS) Yoon Eun Hye’s Marry Him If You Dare is continuing it’s downward spiral with 5%, recording the lowest “ever” ratings since its pilot.

Personal Note:

You may have noticed that I stopped recapping Marry Him If You Dare from episode 10. Furthermore, I will not continue with it any longer. The reason is simple. I am heartbroken by how it is faring and last night’s results was another blow to my already broken heart. I have no motivation left in me to continue with that task but will continue to watch the show in support of my Eun Hye. But thank you to those who have read my recaps.

“I Can Hear Your Voice” Won Major Awards @2013 APAN Star Awards

Lee Bo Young Lee Jong Suk

The 2013 APAN Star Awards was held on November 16th at Jeongsimhwa Cultural Center in Daejeon City hence its known locally as Dejeon Drama Festival.Lee Hwi Jae and Soyeon of T-Ara were the masters of ceremonies. The very successful ghost story romantic drama, “I Can Hear Your Voice” took home four major awards including Best Couple for its leads Lee Bo Young and Lee Jong Suk.

This is another one of the many awarding ceremonies in South Korea. Don’t they just love to hand out awards? Most of the major cities have their own drama or movie festivals. It’s probably they way of promoting tourism so can’t really blame them besides most of the people love to see some celebrities in their own turf. Not to mention each of the major broadcast networks have their own drama awards to boot. When you look at the list though, it’s a bit confusing. It seems like they want to accommodate everyone so they give out awards in “hierarchy” as I’d like to call it. So don’t get confused to see so many best actors and actresses. So, what’s the difference between a best actor from an excellent actor to an acting award for an actor? Confusing eh?! Beats me!

Here are winners:

  • Daesang Grand Prize – Song Hye Gyo (That Winter the Wind Blows)
  • Best Lead Actor – Lee Jun Ki (Two Weeks)
  • Best Lead Actress – Lee Bo Young (I Can Hear Your Voice)
  • Excellent Actor Award – Lee Jong Suk (I Can Hear Your Voice)
  • Excellent Actress Award – Kim So Yeon (Two Weeks)
  • Acting Award (Actor) – Jung Woong In (I Can Hear Your Voice)
  • Acting Award (Actress) – Kim Sung Ryung (Queen of Ambition)
  • Best Couple Award – Lee Jong Suk and Lee Bo Young (I Can Hear Your Voice)
  • Best Rookie Actor – Choi Jin Hyuk (Gu Family Book) and Kim Woo Bin (School 2013)
  • Best Rookie Actress – Lee Yoo Bi (Gu Family Book)and Kim Yoo Ri (The Master’s Sun, Cheongdamdong Alice)
  • Best Child Actor – Cheon Bo Keun (The Queen’s Classroom)
  • Best Child Actress – Kim Hyang Gi (The Queen’s Classroom)

“Secret” Successfully Ended on Top plus Cast Celebration

Secret successfully ended it’s 16 episode run last week with it’s finale episode aired on November 14th. It had quite a steep path, debuting with a single digit but quietly rose to the top of the Wednesday-Thursday block. The final episode got a nationwide rating of 18.9. Although it failed to clitch the 20% mark nationwide, it did manage to pull that feat in Seoul registering a 20.6% rating. It’s closest rival “The Heirs” got a nationwide rating of 15.9% and forget about Medical Top Team because it’s way below the batting average. After the final shoot, the whole cast including its production team celebrated with a simple traditional meal con farewell party.

To be honest I didn’t really follow this drama religiously. Angsty, revenge dramas are not really my cup of tea. I am more of a romance, light drama, type of person. Plus I’m not a fan of any of the leads. Hwang Jung Eum is good actress but she just looks so strange nowadays on TV like she has had too much botox done. I have nothing against the procedure but sometimes it really makes a person look strange than pretty. For his part, Ji Sung fared better here. This was a way better drama than his previous utter mess of a sageuk slash fantasy slash whatever Daepoongsoo or The Great Seer. There wasn’t anything great about it.

I am more excited with the drama replacing this time slot which used to be called Pretty Man but has now adapted the official English tile “Bel Ami”. More with that in another post…

BigBang’s TOP Voted as “Sexiest Male Musician of 2013”

Fuse TV recently unveiled its sexiest male and female musician. 15 ladies and 15 gents battled it out but only two were chosen. So who’s hotness is beyond sizzling? BigBang’s very own Choi Seung Hyun more popularly known for his single moniker “TOP” is king of hotness! I couldn’t agree more. His eyes alone could melt any girl’s panties off. He got the most number of votes for the male category with 1.5 million while female counterpart went to none other than Britney Spears (yeah Work it B*tch!) with almost the same numbers. Other famous celebs in the sexiest list are: Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake and even Jay-Z.

Speaking of TOP, his movie Alumni is doing pretty well at the South Korean box office. Barely 10 days after its release date, the movie is about to break the 1 million mark for attendance as of this writing. And because of the his group’s (BigBang) popularity in the region, a special screening will also be held in Taiwan on December 20th. Another hooray for my Tabi!

Yoon Eun Hye Debuts “New Do” on Marry Him If You Dare

With half of the episodes of Marry Him If You Dare 미래의선택 done, the production team and its main star Yoon Eun Hye agreed to shed the old image of Na Mi Rae and debut the new. In an interview, the star said that they felt the need to inject something new and fresh into the drama. With the direction the character is going, she is dreaming of a good future, to be distinguished at work and change herself.

About time! I mean the perm was actually growing on me and I thought she looked cute, but ditching it for a stylish, more sophisticated bob is a good decision. I’m loving it! She looks young and fresh. Don’t you think so?  It is a sort of symbolism for what the character wants to do with her life. In the previous episodes, Mi Rae was irresponsible, childish, and she depended on the men around her too much. As the story progresses, she became bolder, more confident and self reliant. Thus, the hair has a story to tell on its own. I just hope that the story improves as it enters the second half.

Kim Tan and Young Do Duke it Out, The Heirs Style!

I have nothing to say on this matter. Or maybe just a little. How pretty Cha Eun Sang must be feeling when two of the hottest boys in your ultra elite school is duking it out just for you. Or are they really fighting over her and not merely satisfying their bruised egos the size of a football field? This bromance is going to the next level and I’m liking it. Evil laugh.

Let the pictures do the talking.

The Face Reader Sweeps 50th Grand Bell Film Awards with 6 Wins

The 50th annual Daejong Film Awards took place yesterday at the KBS Hall with Ha Ji Won and Shin Hyun Joon as masters of ceremony. This year’s biggest blockbuster films took home most of the awards. The Face reader got 6 out of its 11 nominations, Miracle in Room No.7 took home 4 awards, Snowpiercer and Berlin Files got 2.

The three male cast members of The Face Reader managed to get individual awards. Song Kang Ho got the best actor award while Jo Jung Suk took home the best supporting actor award. This is Jo Jung Suk’s first win as actor (those other popularity awards don’t count). This must really be his year. He’s living up to the title “breakout star”. Meanwhile, Lee Jung Jae grabbed the popular choice award. It is also interesting to note that Kim Soo Hyun bagged the award for best male newcomer. The boy’s gone a long way from his Dream High days. I believe he even surpassed those who came before him not just in popularity but in artistic merits as well.

This year’s awarding ceremony was far more interesting than last year which was so predictable with Masquerade winning most (and I mean MOST) of the 22 categories.

Here’s the list of the winners:

  • Best Film: The Face Reader
  • Best Director: Han Jae-rim (The Face Reader)
  • Best Screenplay: Miracle in Cell No.7
  • Best Actor: Ryu Seung Ryong (Miracle in Cell No.7) and Song Kang Ho (The Face Reader)
  • Best Actress: Uhm Jung Hwa (Montage)
  • Best Supporting Actor: Jo Jung Suk
  • Best Supporting Actress: Jang Young Nam (Wolf Boy)
  • New Director Award: Jung Byung Gil (Confession of Murder)
  • Best Newcomer Actress: Seo Eun Ah (Act)
  • Best Newcomer Actor: Kim Soo hyun (Secretly, Greatly)
  • Best in Cinematography: Berlin Files
  • Best in Editing: Snowpiercer
  • Best in Lighting: Berlin Files
  • Best Costume Design: The Face Reader
  • Best Art Direction: Snowpiercer
  • Best Musical Score: New World
  • Best Production: Miracle in Room No.7
  • Popularity Award: Lee Jung Jae (The Face Reader)
  • Special Jury Prize: Miracle in Room No.7
